Trans Labrador Highway

By ROAD
You can visit Central Labrador via route 389/500 starting at Baie Comeau Quebec (Via 389), traveling north east to Route 500 (we call it the Trans Labrador Highway) to Labrador City and then east past Churchill Falls towards Goose Bay. BE AWARE that this is mainly a gravel road, not paved, so please drive carefully. It is about a 14 hour trip.
The new road link is now open between Goose Bay and Cartwright, on the Atlantic seaboard. Travellers can continue their road trips directly to the Labrador Straits for the ferry crossing of the Strait of Belle Isle from Blanc Sablon, Quebec between May and January. Starting February 1, the Sir Robert Bond will operate two round trips per week between CornerBrook and Blanc Sablon.

When there is severe weather, portions of this road may be closed to ensure your safety. Please calll for Winter Road conditions and information ph 709-896-7888
SAFETY NEWS - There is NO cell phone service on this long wilderness route, but the Provincial Government has a program in place for you to "borrow" a satellite phone for use between Labrador City and Goose Bay and Port Hope Simpson. There is NO FEE for this service. Pick up and drop off points at the hotels in each town. For residents of Newfoundland you must provide a drivers licence or credit card. For non- residents, you must provide a credit card. The phones are only for emergency use and are programmed to enable direct calls to the police.
Satellite phones can now be picked up at the following participating hotels:
Wabush Hotel in Wabush;
Midway Travel Inn in Churchill Falls;
Hotel North Two and Royal Inn and Suites in Happy Valley-Goose Bay; and,
Alexis Hotel in Port Hope Simpson.

You can visit our region by air, with daily flights stopping at Goose Bay Airport (YYR) on Innu Mikun Provincial Airlines from St. John's, Deer Lake, or Montreal, or Air Canada from Halifax. Which ever mode you choose, we know you will enjoy your visit. Both Innu Mikun Provincial Airlines and Air Labrador provide service between Labrador communities.

The Marine Atlantic ferry service opened during the summer season. You can drive your vehicle to Lewisporte, Newfoundland, board the ferry "Sir Robert Bond" and sail for 36 hours on to Goose Bay. 2010 may be the last year for this service since the road link will be connected. Or you can drive north along the Viking Trail to St. Barbe, Newfoundland, board the 2 hour "Apollo" ferry crossing to Blanc Sablon, Quebec, then drive along the scenic route of the Labrador Coastal Drive to Cartwright and board the "Sir Robert Bond" there for a shorter 12 hour sail across Lake Melville to Goose Bay. The "Bond" ports in Goose Bay on Sundays and Tuesdays only.
